If you’ve never worked out before, Planet Fitness is a decent place to learn your way around a gym and figure out how to use all of the different machines. I’m not a fan of the chain, but its mission to provide a safe space for people to work out is one I can get behind even though the way they go about it is questionable.

Somehow, despite its false claims, Planet Fitness is the largest gym franchise in the US in terms of number of locations and number of members. And if you make one tiny mistake, you’ll likely get called out for it. It discourages a variety of training styles, and it’s not a place where bodybuilders, powerlifters, CrossFitters, or anyone who just wants to get strong are welcomed. Planet Fitness claims it’s a judgment-free zone, but that’s a bit of false advertising.

Blink is better than Planet Fitness because its environment is more welcoming, it has a larger amount of strength equipment, and you can lift heavy. On the other hand, Blink Fitness proves you can offer a good gym experience for an affordable price while appealing to people with all types of training goals. Its lack of basic pieces of equipment like barbells also makes me question how it can be called a gym. Its low membership costs are appealing, but its policies tend to turn people away. Planet Fitness is one of the most interesting gyms I’ve visited for a multitude of reasons.
